The Marine Club originated in 1946 with meetings upstairs at the White Kitchen at Poydras and Claiborne, after an organization meeting at the NOAC.
There were about 50 members in the early days - inspectors, ABS personnel, private surveyors, port engineers and shop supervisors - all out for good fellowship at the monthly informal get-togethers.
Many of the early meetings were at Lawrence's Restaurant, Dryades and Poydras, where seafood was the favorite dish. Broussard's was also a favorite meeting place.
Dues were $5.00 per year then.
The Marine Club now has 200 members and enjoys a fine reputation around town along with our down-to-earth fellowship.
Good food, good drinks and lots of beer and jokes (not to mention our very efficient business sessions) still characterize our meetings just as they did in the early years.
The board of directors meets monthly and accomplishes the planning for the operation of the club and the various functions enjoyed by all.
